Safe Chemicals Act Passes Committee, First Vote in 36 Years

For the first time in thirty-six years, Congress voted to update our out of date chemical safety laws. In the wake of growing frustration among parents, cancer survivors and health professionals, the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee voted on Senator Frank Lautenberg’s Safe Chemicals Act (S.847).

Andy Igrejas, Campaign Director for Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families stated:

“Today’s vote is a victory for American families dealing with many health problems, like childhood cancer, linked to unregulated chemicals.

We have a long way to go, but this is the first official action by a Congressional Committee to address the problem in 36 years. We hope Senate Republicans can find a way to join in this important work as this legislation moves to the Senate floor.”
