Get the Facts: Parabens

Parabens are found in sunscreen, hair styling gel, shampoo/conditioner, cosmetics, lotion and other products.
Potential health effects include:

  • Related to hormone disruption (mimics estrogen, inhibits testosterone)
Commonly found in:

  • Cosmetics
  • Sunscreen
  • Shampoo/conditioner
  • Hair styling gel/lotion
  • For more, check out EWG’s Skin Deep database

Consumer tips:
To find products with parabens, look for any ingredient on the label that ends with “paraben”). Some products that may contain parabens include cosmetics, sunscreen, shampoo, conditioner and hair styling gel.

* Under our weak federal laws, it’s impossible for us to know all the uses of parabens in consumer products. As a result, this is not an exhaustive list of all products containing parabens.
